It was a big week for our friends at PillPack, as it was announced that they will be acquired by Amazon for $1 billion dollars. PillPack is a 5 year old startup that brought the pharmacy industry to the digital age. They deliver pre-sorted medications that are prepared in their daily dosages in order to optimize the customer experience. “PillPack makes it simple for any customer to take the right medication at the right time, and feel healthier,” TJ Parker, co-founder and CEO of PillPack said in a statement.

The acquisition is significant move for Amazon, and represents a potential shakeup in the pharmaceutical industry as Rite-Aid, CVS, Walgreens, and other traditional pharmacies are confronted with a game-changing new business model. “PillPack’s visionary team has a combination of deep pharmacy experience and a focus on technology,” Amazon CEO of Worldwide Consumer Jeff Wilke said.

Although WalMart was rumored to have been eyeing PillPack for acquisition, Amazon ultimately won out. We’re excited for our friends at PillPack and wish them the best in their new home as a part of the Amazon family!
